Recently BC BuzZ got to hit the road and venture to the Thompson Okanagan and into the Loop, Kamloops that is. Enjoying everything from a successful film festival (KFF) to eating and drinking good at great spots like Felix on 5th and The Noble Pig as well as hitting up one of our fave spots in town and kicking it back with the locals at The Art We Are! Totally BuzZ’d every time we head into Kamloops as the one spot that mixes art, music and really good natural food is always open for business with open arms. A fun family theatre event featuring young performers from Vancouver’s eastside

Saturday, June 2^nd – 2pm & 7pm at The Fei and Milton Wong Experimental Theatre

WONDERLAND features 26 young performers, ages 8 – 12, who have worked together to create a show for their friends, family and community. WONDERLAND, a modern spin in the tradition of pantomime, combines audience interaction,music, comedy and dance, and is suitable for audiences from the very young to the young at heart. The play is directed by Paul Belanger, and features sets by Mark Pilon, musical direction by Erin Aubrey, choreography by Kat Single-Dain and costumes by Jodi Jacyk (The Playhouse).

About Project Limelight:

Project Limelight is offered at no cost to participants and is open to young people aged 8 to 15 in the DTES and surrounding areas. The first month is spent learning skills, techniques andforms of expression, including clowning, creative writing, voice work, movement and improvisation. The following three months are spent rehearsing a full-length theatrical production, leading up to a final performance on a community stage, giving participants the opportunity to showcase everythingthey have accomplished.

Project Limelight works with creative professionals who want to pass their skills and their passion on to the next generation by creating a fun-filled environment that inspires kids to express themselves. The focus at Project Limelight is on enthusiasm and passion, and the vision is to create a community of support for young people as they make their way through their most formative years.

Project Limelight operates with the support of Strathcona Community Centre, The Fei and Milton Wong Theatre, SFU’s Vancity Office of Community Engagement and other generous sponsors.

DOXA Documentary Film Festival

With more than 100 films, 72 screenings, 5 venues, 6 world premieres and the first ever digital interactive film to open the festival, DOXA is committed to breaking new ground in documentary presentation. The festivalʼs Opening and Closing films are engaged with systems of surveillance, and technology. From the life of a grizzly bear documented in more than a million motion captured images in BEAR 71, to the call for freedom issued by artist/activist Ai Weiwei via his twitter account in AI WEIWEI: NEVER SORRY, lived experience is increasingly mediated through the lens of technology. The Launch of Live at Squamish 2012

Well we couldn’t be more BuzZ’d to share the great news that Live at Squamish is back for a 3rd fabulous summer. Last night fans of BC bands The Matinee & Current Swell got a taste of whats to come with a Live at Squamish line-up announcement and a hump-day rock show at The Commodore (see the launch video below that was played for the crowd).

Once again British Columbians will camp out, chill out and rock out under the Chief from August 24 - 26. This year’s festival includes: The Tragically Hip, City and Colour, Chromeo, Mother Mother & More! Plus a fest wouldn’t be a fest without some fun. Add a silent disco, some glamping (yes thats glamour-camping), an artisan village, food galour and the list goes on and on. BC BuzZ is proud to support HANDSUP! A night to raise a glass, raise awareness and raise your hands in support for girls affected by gender violence in Kenya. This is the first fundraising event by VanCity’s Camera’s 4 Change organization which is an arts based program that educates and provides skills to individuals in photography, videography and storytelling. Giving a voice to those that may not otherwise have one.

HANDSUP! takes place on Thursday April 19th at the old Boneta Restaurant at 1 West Cordova from 7pm-9:30pm. Expect a night of wine, art & entertainment including the soulful sounds of Rio By Night, the delicious delights of Roaming Dragon and a auction including art from some of VanCity’s best!

With all the talk lately about arts funding cuts, theatres and book store closures, its with great pleasure to spread a little BuzZ about a brand new film festival in VanCity!

Kickstart which is an organization thats mission is to produce, present and promote works by artists with disabilities is launching WAM: Wide Angle Media Festival from March 22-25

WAM is an inaugural disability media festival featuring commissioned shorts, international films and workshops.

The theme of the Festival – “wide angle” – refers to the spirit of expansiveness and inclusion that lies at the core of disability arts, and to the widest range of media genres and formats. The intent is to broaden audiences for works by media artists with disabilities; to celebrate the spectrum of genres, styles and vision of those artists; and, to support the creation of new works.

Audiences will enjoy a privileged glimpse of the world through the lens of the disability experience. The themes of these works will be unlimited – they are not necessarily films about issues of disability; they will be about anything under the sun, as seen by filmmakers with disabilities

Chinatown is changing and driving this change are the people within it. The people who live it, who breathe it, who embody the spirit of it. And that’s what The Flats want. The Flats are a fresh new living space in Chinatown that honours the historical landscape. The Flats are looking for game changers, the revolutionaries, the moms and dads making Chinatown better.

Nominate your top difference maker and let them know what makes that person/business so awesome, or show us with photos/videos by Apr 2, 2012.

The top five nominees will be announced on Apr 9th and invited to an event presented by The Flats at 219 Georgia East at Café Brixton on Apr 11th, where the winner will be announced by a panel of local judges.

When it comes to judging, they’re not a judgmental bunch but here’s the criteria they’ll be using to select the top 5:

·     Individuality: The top 5 contenders will all have their own personal approach & style
·     Charity: Whether it’s time, money or care, show us how the person or business is giving back
·     Creativity: The more creative the entry, the better – send us photos, videos, life-size art installations, whatever gets your point across
·     Ingenuity: The more unique the contribution is to Chinatown community, the more our ears will perk up

The winner will receive $2,000 to their charity of choice.

Jest for Joy brings joy and inspiration to the British Columbian health care system through the integration of clown-doctoring. Their ultimate goal is to improve and focus on the wellness of patients in health care settings through wit, physical theatre, improv, song & dance and tons of foolery! Since their inception into the CFL in 1954, BC Lions have been a force to be reckoned with and this past year was no exception. British Columbia’s best took home last year’s 99th Grey Cup victory, crowning them CFL champions. This year they are back to defend their title with pride, opening their season at the newly renovated BC Place with a Grey Cup rematch vs the Blue Bombers on June 29th! BC BuzZ is excited to bring its viewers behind the scenes with Lions news, videos and chats with some of the locals on the team! On January 24th BC BuzZ got the opportunity to Taste BC…..literally!

Liberty Wine Merchant for the 18th year hosted over 500 thirsty & hungry guests at the Four Seasons Hotel in VanCity to devour drinks & food from British Columbia’s best wineries, breweries, restaurants & more!

From Okanagan Falls’ Blasted Church to Creston BC’s Baillie-Grohman to Yaletown’s (and our fave) Rodney’s Oyster House, BC’s best was showcased to its fullest.

Since the event launched, Taste BC has raised over $186,000 to benefit BC Children’s Hospital’s Oak Tree Clinic, including $15,000 from this years Taste BC.
