This letter is from a BC BuzZ viewer and supporter of arts & culture in Vancouver:
Retweets Don’t Pay the Bills
Anyone that has been to the Waldorf at least once in the last year raise your hand. Ok cool, you folks with those hands in the air I strongly support your outrage over the closing of the historic and beloved Waldorf. Those of you with hands not raised should have them hanging solemnly at your side…yet they are not. Those are the hands that are busy tweeting, facebooking and bitching about the closure of yet another Vancouver landmark.
In this age of social media the line becomes so blurred. Following someone on twitter does not make you a supporter. Retweeting the line up of food carts at the amazing food cart fest does help garner awareness and businesses need that word of mouth advertising to thrive. However, what really matters is getting people in the door and if you have not bought a ticket, bought drinks, or as one of my twitter friends said, “puked your guts out in the private bathroom on your birthday” then I’m sorry, you don’t deserve to bitch.
While this may not paint the most positive picture of my childhood I spent many, many nights at the Waldorf in the 80’s while my mother and uncle would drink white russians at the bar. I will always remember those days of big hair and teamsters fondly. Yet since the reopening of the Waldorf I have been only there once. And that is the reason I do not feel entitled to wail about the closing.
This is not aimed at those of you who truly loved and supported the Waldorf and there are many of you out there. This is for those who are looking for a reason to complain about our city or really about anything that is a hot topic. Do you have a friend who didn’t stop talking about the lockout yet couldn’t name a single player on the Canucks roster? Yeah, I know him too. We all do.
Figure out what you really do believe in and support it wholeheartedly. Get off the computer (aka soapbox) and go see and support local establishments. We have incredible businesses, galleries, theatres, shops, restaurants that need it!
Although…that sounds like too much work…so maybe you’ll just hit retweet instead.
Punchy Lauren
